Dr. Van den Berg Bernard
Biography
Bernard van den Berg, PhD is a scientist at the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), the Netherlands. At the Einthoven Laboratory for Vascular and Regenerative Medicine Department of internal Medicine (Nephrology), my research interest is focused in the pathophysiology of the vascular endothelial glycocalyx, which serves as a protective barrier between the endothelium and blood. While this line predominantly concerned the role of diabetes induced glycocalyx damage in initiating glomerular disease, diabetic nephropathy. To date, my focus expands into the role of extracellular matrix and the glycobiology of endothelial cells and its significance for interaction with neighboring cells, such as pericytes, to promote vascular integrity in kidney organoid development and tumor vessels.
